- Check-In: 4:00 PM
- If you arrive early, we’ll make sure you can store your bags and at that point will be able to let you know about how long the cleaning will take and when you’ll be able to check in.
- Check-In Method: Smart lock
- The door handle has a code and that code will be the last 4 digits of the phone number you used to make the reservation followed by the # sign. You first press in the middle of the handle and it lights up, then you put the last four digits of your phone number, then the pound # sign and the handle will flash then you can turn the handle to enter. We’re onsite, so please let us know if you have any issues, or questions!
- Check-Out: 10:00 AM
- We do not have check out instructions except please take your belongings and have a fantastic rest of your trip! Please let us know when you have checked out so we can start cleaning. This sometimes allow us to offer early check in to our next guests, which we like to do when we can.
- Quiet Hours: 10 PM – 8 AM to ensure a peaceful environment for all guests in this shared building.
- Front gate closed and unlocked at all times: Horses that roam freely on the island like to come in and eat our garden and laundry and leave behind smelly gifts.
- No Third-Party Bookings: That means that the person who books the house must be the person who stays and that you cannot book for someone else.
- No Smoking: Smoking is strictly prohibited inside the home. You may smoke in designated outdoor areas only. Please dispose of cigarette butts responsibly.
- No Parties or Events: Unauthorized parties, events, or gatherings are not permitted. Quiet social gatherings are fine but must adhere to occupancy limits.
- No Commercial Photography: This is prohibited without prior approval.
- No pets are allowed.
- Tampering with the technology is not allowed.
- Lost or Damaged Items: Please inform us of any damage or lost items during your stay. Fees may apply for unreported damages.
- Breaking any house rule can result in immediate check out without refund.
- Exterior security camera present: Front entrance and outdoor side yard, no camera’s inside.
- Property has shared spaces: Your apartment is yours and private, all of the outside spaces are shared, the gated entry to the property, the outdoor areas, the street parking, etc. Your private space is the space inside your listed unit.
- Parking: We have, in the many years I have lived here, always had easy street parking Usually within a house or two and always within a block.
- Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi is available. Name and password will be shared after booking.
- Laundry: There is a laundry in Isabel Segunda. Isla Nena laundry. We can sometimes depending on our schedule and the cleaning schedule do a load of laundry for $20 (both electric and water are expensive here on this tiny island).
- Potential noise during stays: PR is loud, loud music in cars that pass by in the streets and from people’s homes. Roosters that crow day and night. There are coqui (much beloved here and missed when we travel) that are loud at night. There are loud conversations (can sound like arguments). Louder than most are Used to!
- Animals: We don’t own any dangerous animals, that said, Vieques itself does. Horses wander freely here, as do cows, iguanas, goats, mongoose, dogs, cats, and more! They will all come in and damage our home and garden badly. This is why we ask to please, please, please keep the gate to the yard closed!
- Pet(s) live on the property: Many animals wander freely here, it’s part of the charm, and part of the challenge. We feed, provide healthcare, and water for many feral cats who would otherwise be uncared for from our apartment so you may see them on the grounds going to and from the food and water.
- Limited essential amenities: We have regular and extended outages of water, electricity, gasoline for vehicles, and very limited healthcare (there is no hospital on Vieques). Groceries are limited and sporadic. To shop is to forage here! If an amenity gets broken it can take us a long time to replace it, though we try hard.
- Do not come up the stairs: Guests don’t have access, but we are still under construction in our apartment, which is upstairs, and we are still working on railings for the porches upstairs. It’s not safe for anyone unsupervised to come up the stairs.
- By Foot:
- When you are staying with us, you will be staying in Esperanza, so it is an option to not rent a vehicle. You can plan a tour with a tour guide to an outlying area, and just walk the ½ mile down to the Malecon to the beach and restaurants along that strip and around the corner and continue directly into SunBay, too! It can be close to a wash financially to do a tour versus renting a vehicle.
- Publicos / Taxi:
- We are a 15 minute taxi ride away from where the ferry lands, and about the same from the airport. Depending on the time of your arrival there may be publicos (vans usually- local shared transportation) or taxis that meet the ferry and you can ask to join one to Esperanza. If it’s a later ferry, that’s not always the case, and it’s not always available depending on how many are on the ferry, etc. You may want to pre-book a taxi by calling one of the taxi services and arranging a ride ahead of time.
- The taxi rates vary a bit by time of day, number of people, and amount of bags, and they are usually between $20-$30. There are what are called publicos which are shared transportation, and for two people can be slightly less, closer to $15-20.
- You, when you are staying with us in Esperanza, be near the pick up and drop off points for the biobay tours so you won’t need a taxi or publico then, which is good because the night taxi’s are generally more expensive.

- Car Rental:
- Rentals for vehicles are limited on the island and we suggest that you book one right away, if you haven’t already and you want to.
- You may want to ask the car rental company about meeting you at your arrival, either at the ferry or airport and the same when you drop off to leave.
- When returning cars you will be charged for wet seats so think twice about leaving the top off the jeep.

- Golf Cart / UTV Rental:
- Roads on the island are often narrow and uneven, so extra caution is needed. If you’re using a golf cart or UTV, take it slow and stay centered on the pavement. The edges can be steep where the asphalt meets gravel, and going off too quickly could cause the vehicle to become unstable. The carts go 25 mph maximum speed so it will take a while but as long as it’s sunny and daytime it should be a lovely ride!
